What is a flexible magnet?

A flexible magnet is a permanent magnet that is made of ferrite magnet powder and rubber. A permanent magnet is that which emits a magnetic field without the need for any electricity. Flexible magnets can be extruded into profiles which can be coiled, typically in 10 or 30 metre rolls, and then used for applications such as shower door or refrigerator closures. The cross section of an extruded magnetic profile can have detailed protrusions that allow it to slide into a mating aluminium extrusion and remain captive with only the front magnetized edge showing. Used for applications not possible using 'hard' magnets, flexible magnets contain magnetic particles captive inside a flexible polymer binder.

What are the different types of flexible magnet?

Types of flexible magnet: flexible magnetic sheet, flexible magnetic tape, and flexible warehouse magnets

There are three forms of flexible magnet: flexible magnetic sheet, flexible magnetic tape and flexible warehouse magnets.

Flexible magnetic tape

White roll of flexible magnetic tape

Flexible magnetic tape consists of a long, thin, flexible magnet which has been extruded into a flat rectangular shape during manufacture. Flexible magnets are the same as ferrite magnets with the addition of synthetic rubber which makes them flexible. A ferrite magnet is an alloy made of strontium carbonate and iron oxide.
Flexible magnets can be made in two different ways, either by extrusion, or calendering. The two different processes are needed to create the different widths of flexible magnet.
Extrusion, which involves shaping the molten material used to make a magnet with a die, is used for the thin flexible warehouse magnets and flexible magnetic tape.
Calendering, on the other hand, where the molten material is forced between rollers, is used to create the wide flexible magnetic sheets.

  Laminated flexible magnetic tape

The flexible magnetic tape is then wound onto a core to be used as a roll of tape. It can be available either with or without an adhesive backing, allowing it to be attached to ferromagnetic and non-magnetic materials. Flexible magnetic tape consists of a long, thin strip of magnetised rubber. Flexible magnetic tape can come with or without adhesive on one of its faces to allow it to attach to both ferromagnetic and non-magnetic surfaces.
Flexible magnetic tape is very similar to a flexible magnetic sheet, the only difference is that the tape is narrower. A flexible magnet is considered to be flexible magnetic tape if it has a width of less than 76.2mm (3").
Flexible magnetic tape can be used to attach fabric to a metal frame for display purposes, labelling, to make shower door seals, or to temporarily attach seasonal decorations to a metal wall.
When a section of magnetic tape has been cut, it is known as a magnetic strip.
Magnetic tape dispensers are available for magnetic tape which is 12.7mm (0.5") wide, and allow you to cut the tape to any desired length.
A magnetic tape dispenser is particularly useful for arts and crafts where you only require a small piece at any given time, for example if you are creating a fridge magnet with a photograph.
To use, pull the flexible magnetic tape out until you have reached the desired length, then pull the magnetic tape onto the teeth at the edge of the tape dispenser to cut it.

Flexible warehouse magnet

  Flexible warehouse magnet

A flexible warehouse magnet is flexible magnetic tape which has been made into a 'C' shape. The 'C' shape provides two lips for a piece of paper and a plastic cover to be slotted through, allowing the magnet to be used as a replaceable label.

Flexible warehouse magnets are used in warehouses where stock is constantly changing, so the labels need to be replaced easily. A flexible warehouse magnet is flexible magnetic tape which has been made into a 'C' shape. The 'C' shape magnet provides two lips for a piece of paper and a plastic cover to be slotted through allowing the magnet to be used as a replaceable label.
They can be used in a warehouse to help organise stock, hence the name flexible warehouse magnet. It is particularly useful for this task due to its magnetic capabilities allowing the labels to be moved around the warehouse easily when stock has changed. It can also be used on production planning boards where information needs to be constantly changed.
The card inside the flexible warehouse magnet can be changed allowing the same magnet to hold different barcodes, prices or names of the products simply by changing the card.

Flexible magnetic sheet

Pre-cut magnetic sheet - magnetic label

A flexible magnetic sheet is a piece of flexible magnet which has been flattened into a large wide sheet. The difference between a flexible magnetic sheet and flexible magnetic tape is their widths. Flexible magnetic sheet has a width over 76.2mm (3"), whilst flexible magnetic tape is anything under this. Flexible magnetic sheet is a wide piece of magnetised rubber which has been rolled very thinly. It can come with or without adhesive on one of its faces to allow it to stick to both ferromagnetic and non-magnetic surfaces.
Flexible magnetic sheet is very similar to flexible magnetic tape, the only difference is that flexible magnetic sheet is wider. A flexible magnet is considered to be a sheet if it has a width of greater than 76.2mm (3").
The laminate on the top of a flexible magnetic sheet can be written on with marker pens and used as a label. This is useful for production planning boards where information is constantly being moved around.
The most common use for flexible magnetic sheet is as a fridge magnet. This is because it can be cut into any size or shape, making it very versatile (e.g. it can be cut into the shape of a puzzle, for children to play with).
Flexible magnetic sheets can be used for any form of advertising that needs to be placed on a ferromagnetic material, such as a replaceable bill board or car sign. One of the most popular uses for flexible magnetic sheet is as an L-plate on a learner driver's car.
Hospitals also use flexible magnetic sheets to hold onto small instruments and needles in operating theatres. The magnetic sheet has enough strength to hold onto these small items, which ensures they do not become contaminated by rolling onto the floor.

What is a flexible magnet used for?

There are many ways to use a flexible magnet. To illustrate their applicability, here are a few examples:

Warehouse labels

Three flexible warehouse magnets labelling products on shelves

Flexible warehouse magnets are used for signs which can be easily changed and replaced due to a high stock turnover. Flexible magnetic labels are now commonly used in warehouse operations to allow for ease of relabeling pallet locations without the mess of a permanent adhesive label.
With a dry erase marker, you can temporarily create labels for stock spaces, erase and remark the area or item again.  These flexible magnets are available in rolls or cut sizes of various widths and lengths to fit your needs.  These magnetic labels are also available in various thicknesses for the required strength.  Dry erase flexible labels are convenient for changing on the fly without requiring a printer or label maker.
Plain flexible magnets allow you to simply apply your adhesive inventory label to these strong magnets and place them on your shelves or racks.  Magnetic labels are the perfect solution if your inventory moves frequently within your warehouse.  These flexible magnet labels are available in rolls or cut sizes of various widths and lengths to fit your needs.  Plain magnet labels are also available in various thicknesses for the required strength.

Removing paper from a flexible warehouse magnet

The very nature of a flexible warehouse magnet aids in this role as it can be peeled off and reattached onto any ferromagnetic material, such as a steel shelf, an infinite number of times. Most also have a replaceable piece of card which can be easily written upon and replaced when they are no longer needed.
The manufacturing process for Flexible Magnets allows for the creation of functional profiles in addition to flat product.  One common application for flexible magnets is the standard "C” channels profile in various widths for labeling.  Often used in a warehouse to label shelves, it is also seen in offices for name plates.

What are the parts of a flexible magnetic sheet?

Parts of a flexible magnetic sheet

Diametrically magnetised and multi-pole magnetised flexible magnetic sheets

Magnetic Poles

The magnetic poles of a flexible magnetic sheet can be magnetised in two ways: diametrically and multi-pole.

  Diametrically magnetised flexible magnetic sheet

Diametrically magnetised

A diametrically magnetised flexible magnetic sheet is magnetised through the diameter of the magnet.

  Graphic panels with no seams

It can attract ferromagnetic materials from either of the two edges of the flexible magnet. This is particularly useful for graphic displays where the user does not want a visible seam in between each section, as the sides of the magnet are attracted to each other, holding the two edges together.

Multi-pole magnetic mounting pad - three north poles and three south poles

Multi-pole

A multi-pole flexible magnetic sheet is where only one face of the magnet is magnetised in the form of a multi-pole magnet.

Multi-pole magnets are magnetised in a striped pattern of alternating north and south poles e.g. north, south, north, south.

Multipole flexible magnet with a lot of magnetic poles

A multi-pole flexible magnetic sheet can have between 2 to 60 magnetic poles per inch. The more poles per inch a magnet has the greater it's holding strength, but the reach of the magnetic field is reduced. This creates a strong magnetic field close to the magnet to give it a greater holding power. As thicker flexible magnetic sheets are stronger due to their size, they have fewer poles per inch.

  Laminated flexible magnetic sheet

Magnetic sheets with adhesive or laminates on one magnetic face require multi-pole magnetisation, due to the barrier they create, preventing the magnetic field from escaping through the top of the magnetic sheet.

Flexible magnetic sheet cut into puzzle pieces on a fridge

It allows the multi-pole magnet to either stick to another multi-pole magnet. This would not be possible if the magnet was magnetised in any other way due to the different alignments of a diametrically magnetised and a multi-pole magnet's magnetic poles.

Laminate

  Flexible magnet with laminated layer

The flexible magnetic sheet can be laminated on its non-magnetic side, whilst the other side is magnetised in a multi-pole formation. The laminate is attached to the flexible magnet with the help of powerful adhesives, this means that the laminate cannot be removed from the magnet without a large amount of force.

  Coloured PVC sheets

Flexible magnetic sheets is laminated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to give the sheet added strength and stability. PVC is used as the laminate for flexible magnetic sheet as it will not crack when it is flexed.

  Laminated flexible magnetic sheets

Laminating the flexible magnetic sheet also improves the magnet's visual appearance. A non-laminated flexible magnetic sheet is a dull brown colour, whereas a laminated magnetic sheet can come in a large range of colours. This is particularly useful for arts and crafts projects, such as creating signs.

  Laser jet printer

The laminate on a flexible magnetic sheet can also be printed upon by a laser jet printer. This allows the flexible magnetic sheet to be used as advertising in the form of fridge magnets or car signs.

Adhesive

Adhesive on a flexible magnetic sheet label

The adhesives on a flexible magnetic sheet are laminated onto the non-magnetic face of the magnet. This means that the magnetic capabilities of the magnet are not affected and the magnet has a greater power when it comes to  non-ferromagnetic materials, such as wooden doors.

  Adhesive backed flexible magnetic sheet

The type of adhesive used on a flexible magnetic sheet is a synthetic adhesive made from acrylic. The acrylic adhesive is high tack which means that it can hold very securely to different surfaces.

Backing tape on a flexible magnetic sheet

To stop the adhesive from sticking to surfaces when the magnetic tape is not in use, a backing tape is used to protect it.

Back-coating

Back-coating on a flexible magnetic sheet

Some flexible magnetic sheets, primarily the ones used for car magnets, have a back-coating, which works as a barrier between the magnet and the ferromagnetic material e.g. the car door. This barrier helps to protect the ferromagnetic material from being damaged by the magnet.
